Patrick O’Connell has arrived in Chicago and assumed his role as Director of NewThing! If you know Patrick, you won’t be surprised to hear me say that his passion and enthusiasm is already being felt throughout churches, networks and movements of NewThing. As our Director, Patrick brings tremendous leadership gifts, outstanding church planting experience and a great passion for the mission of Jesus.
The Exponential Conference is multiplying to Los Angeles, CA this October 7-10, 2013 at Saddleback Church! Plans for this conference were put into motion several weeks before the last sold-out Exponential Conference in Orlando when Rick Warren came to Todd Wilson and myself to ask about reproducing the conference in southern California at Saddleback Church. With the online attendance in excess of 40,000 in 93 countries, we knew that with that demand we needed to start thinking about other locations and times. So, if you live on the west coast or missed Exponential in Orlando, now you can join us in October!
On The Verge: a journey into the apostolic future of the church, by Dave Ferguson and Alan Hirsch is one of those “game changing” types of books for churches today. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, download a FREE book summary by clicking here to access the SUMS of On the Verge.
SUMS are short book summaries of the best books on leadership, vision and strategy for today's church leaders. But what makes SUMS really great is that the team at Auxano includes "Go Ahead" actions that give practical next steps for implementing the principles taught in the book. Best of all, SUMS, including the "Go Ahead" actions, are completely free!
Anyone can sign up to receive SUMS for free, sent directly to their email Inbox. Simply sign up at VisionRoom.com by clicking here, and you'll not only get SUMS, but access to all of the free resources for pastors.
After leading NewThing for almost four years and now planting a new campus of Community Christian Church in downtown Chicago (Lincoln Park), I’m continuing to find three things that I believe all church planters must do:
1. Be An Apprentice 2. Build A Great Team 3. Become Self-Sustaining
1. BE AN APPRENTICE . This is too often overlooked. Being an apprentice is mission critical for a church planter. At COMMUNITY we believe that if someone is going to lead, he/she needs to be on an apprentice journey. What does that mean? Well, they must have these three characteristics to jump in the game: • Spiritual Velocity • Relational Intelligence • Teachability Spiritual Velocity is all about momentum. Oftentimes we describe someone as a Christian if they are in the circle with Jesus. What if it’s not whether we're in or out? What if it’s about momentum? Because Jesus is alive, the key question to whether someone is following Jesus is, ‘Do they have spiritual velocity?’
